The Look of Burberry

By | November 5, 2010

The plaid. . . that's Burberry!

The name Burberry is synonymous with casual sophistication. But many people are unaware of the illustrious history of this prestigious fashion house, which has been around for more than 150 years old.The Burberry we know today was started in 1856 by a young man named Thomas Burberry. He opened a small shop in Hampshire, England and by 1870 had grown substantially and became an emporium.

In 1880, Burberry gave us one of the most well known fabrics that we have today, Gabardine, and it is still a staple of many wardrobes for its weatherproof and tear proof attributes. In 1891, Burberry, which had become known as Thomas Burberry and Sons, opened a location in London’s West End on Haymarket. On the eve of the 20th Century Burberry introduced the Tielocken, which was the older cousin to the trench coat we know today. It was worn as part of the officer’s uniform for the British Army.As the 20th Century dawned, Burberry introduced the logo that many know today. The knight logo with the banner reads prorsum; which means forward in Latin.

Burberry has been involved in some of the biggest events of the 20th Century, including outfitting the first man to ever reach the South Pole. In 1915 the British War Office asked Burberry to revise the earlier design of the Officer’s uniform coat. Some of the changes include adding D-rings and epaulettes, and thus the trench coat was born, so named for the trenches that the soldiers fought in during WWI.

One of the most recognizable trademarks of the Burberry Company is The Burberry Check. This distinctive tan and black design was trademarked in 1920 and has been a fixture to the line ever since. In 1955, just shy of the 100 year anniversary of Burberry, the company was awarded a Royal Warrant by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The company was honored with another Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales. In 2006, Burberry celebrated their 150th anniversary and continues to be on the cutting edge of classically chic fashion as well as designer fragrances.

Glamour was at it’s peak in the 1930s. Hollywood stars were in the golden age and loved dark lips and “done” hair. To update this look create a looser updo which replaces the heat-set waves of yesterday. Also change the pencil-thin brows with heavier arches to offset the strong lip color. Here is how to create the modernized 30s look on the left:

At the back separate hair into 2 sections. Twist one section and pin under the opposite side. Twist the second section and cross it over top of the first, pinning to secure. Lightly backcomb the front piece of hair for volume, then pin onto the crown.

Disco was in vogue and feathered locks, rainbows and glitter was the look. To modernize this look use less makeup and replace the feathered hair with bouncy waves. Keep the vibrant hues for the eyes but stay away from the glitter. To modernize the 70s hairstyle and create the look on the right:

When hair is damp, part into large sections and wrap in Velcro rollers. Blow dry. Remove rollers and shake out hair, loosening curls. Set waves with a light hold hairspray. Use a large curling iron on banks to create a slight flipped out effect.

The 1980s saw women asserting themselves in the business world and climbing the corporate ladder. The power suit became fashionable. Big hair, contoured cheekbones competed for attention with the large shoulder pads. To modernize this look soften the contouring of the cheeks and wear loose curls. To achieve this 1980s modernized hairstyle:

Spritz an extra hold hairspray on damp hair for volume, then wrap sections around rollers (the longer the hair the larger the roller). Blowdry hair, then remove rollers. Part hair in the moddle and shake out for texture and movement.

Finding the Perfect Perfume

By | November 3, 2010

Shopping for perfumes is like dating, says Chelsea Chik, a specialist at the French fragrance company Guerlain. “When it comes to scents, people search their whole lives for ‘the one’ – a fragrance that you never tire of and that becomes a part of you going forward,” she says.

1. Get moody. Finding the perfect perfume starts not with your nose, but with your mood: Most people’s fragrance preferences break down into one of five scent categories – floral, woodsy, citrus, fruity and oriental. At Guerlain, customers choose between “mood boards” to find their fragrance category. The boards are abstract – the citrus board may feature images of bathing suits; the fruity one, raspberry macaroons; the oriental one, a red leather stiletto.

2. The nose knows. Next, Ms. Chik presents customers with scent boxes from each category to confirm they like the general range of smells. Unlike perfumes, which carry a combination of different scent categories, the scent boxes are straightforward “one-notes.”

3. Show some skin. A basic rule to choosing perfume is to test the scent on your skin, since the fragrance will evolve with your own body heat and smell.

4. Distance yourself. If you’re using eau de toilette or eau de parfum (the latter is more concentrated than the former), hold the bottle at a half-arm’s distance before spritzing yourself. Parfums (concentrated essential oils), on the hand, should be dabbed.

5. Sweet spots. You body has seven prime spots for perfume, says Ms. Chik: “Your wrist and inside of the elbow on both arms. Both sides of your neck, and underneath your hair on the back of your neck.”

6. Avoid bling. Cover up your jewelry – especially pearls – when applying perfume since the alcohol can erode its surface or bleach its color.

7. Find a safe place. The worst place to store perfume bottles: the bathroom. Keep your scents away from warm or humid areas. “Inside the closet is a nice cool and dry place,” says Ms. Chik.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Auction and Donation

By | October 21, 2010

Donna Karan has issued a special Breast Cancer Awareness edition of Cashmere Mist. She is doing her part in reminding the public of the importance of contributing to the cure for Breast Cancer. Donna Karan Cosmetics will make a donation of $15,000 in connection with the sales of the Limited-Edition Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Eau de Parfum Spray to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Cashmere Mist Breast Cancer Awareness Edition

Cashmere Mist’s engaging warm scent is soft and sensual, creating the sublime sensation of skin wrapped in cashmere. An intoxicating sheer floral, it combines the essences of Moroccan Jasmine, Lily of the Valley and the freshness of Bergamot, against a warm background of Sandalwood, Amber and Musk. For Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Cashmere Mist Eau de Parfum Spray will include a pink ribbon deco on both the bottle and carton to support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

This cause is very near and dear to my heart as my mother is battling with breast cancer for the second time and a dear cousin just passed away at the young age of 50 due to breast cancer. All proceeds to this auction will go to breast cancer: Timeless Fashion and Art Cashmere Mist Breast Cancer Auction
